Lost Cousins

http://www.lostcousins.com/

Lost Cousins is an English site run by Peter Calver. It's free to join and search, but to make connections you need to subscribe. It is based on entering data for your direct and connected ancestors from the 1841 amd 1881 English censuses. When you've logged in and gone to the My Ancestors page, you can click on a Search button which will find new matches with the data you've entered and you can make contact with relatives.

One good thing about entering the data is that this is the first site I've seen where you state whether the name is a blood relative or a direct ancestor. You can also show whether you hold any birth, death or marriage certificates.

My favourite thing about this website is that you can sign up for Peter's twice-monthly email newsletter. It is excellent. Chatty, informative, sometimes quirky, but a lot of useful information from Peter and sometimes some of his subscribers. Good tips, news and warnings. Peter is an activist for genealogists, making FOI requests and lobbying politicians on behalf of genealogy. I can't recommend this newsletter highly enough.

Personally I've not had much success in finding relatives with this website. Just unlucky - most of my as-yet-unknown relatives obviously haven't discovered it and added any data. But many people have had great success and it gets over the annoying features of Genes Reunited Hot Matches where you can have loads of matches but have to weed through many to get to the gold.

The concept is good, the newsletter is fantastic, and the subscriptions won't break the bank. Have a look and a read of the FAQs and see if it's for you.
